Trade unionism in the United Kingdom was an important factor in some economic crises of the 1960s and 1970s, culminating in the end of the winter of discontent in late 1978 and early 1979, when a significant percentage of the country`s public sector workforce was on strike. At that time, about 12,000,000 workers were unionized in the UK. However, the election of Margaret Thatcher`s Conservative party in the general election of May 1979, at the expense of James Callaghan of Labour, led to a major reform of the union, where the level of the strike fell. The level of union membership also declined sharply in the 1980s and continued to decline in most of the 1990s. The long decline of most industries where manual unions were strong, such as steel. B, coal, pressure, docks – was one of the causes of this loss of trade unionists. [58] The framework agreement signed on 22 January 2009 – AQ 2009 (PDF) – set out the general rules on the date of renewal of the contract. The NZBA will be in force for three years with regard to the legal aspects as well as the payment. If a collective agreement is not renewed within the allotted time, workers receive a specific economic bonus. Sectoral collective agreements may also justify the participation of cross-sector social partners if sectoral social partners fail to agree on the extension of the contract. Collective agreements are in the process of being terminated. The parties may continue to apply it, but they are not required to do so unless the ultra-activity of certain specific provisions is expressly stated in the contract.

In the case of indeterminate clauses, any party may withdraw from the agreement, provided that the other party is informed in due course. The collective agreement no longer takes effect after the declared termination date. However, the various employment contracts to which the terminated contract applies are not affected. The new employment contracts are not covered by the terminated contract. With 65% of workers in a trade union, Belgium has one of the highest proportions of trade unions. Only Scandinavian countries have a higher union density. The largest union, with about 1.7 million members, is the Confederation of Christian Democratic Trade Unions (ACV-CSC), established in 1904. [19] The origins of the union go back to the “anti-socialist cotton union,” founded in 1886. [20] The second largest union is the Belgian General Federation of Labour (ABVV-FGTB), which has more than 1.5 million members.

[21] The ABVV-FGTB dates back to 1857, when the first Belgian association in Gant was founded by a group of weavers. These trade unions and other socialists were brought together around 1898. The ABVV-FGTB in its current form dates from 1945. The third major inter-professional union in Belgium is the liberal union (classical liberal) the General Confederation of Liberal Trade Unions of Belgium (ACLVB-CGSLB), which is relatively small compared to the first two, with just under 290,000 members. [22] The ACLVB-CGSLB was founded in 1920 to unite the many small liberal unions.
